Risk is Right

“If our single, all-embracing passion is to make much of Christ in life and death, and if the life that magnifies him most is the life of costly love, then life is risk, and risk is right. To run from it is to waste your life” – John Piper.

This quote has been the echo of my mind this past week. If I look back at past blogs and look at the reasoning as to why I do the things I do, it always seems to come back to security. It’s a constant struggle. Is security good? Is it bad? Is my security dependent upon the things of this world, or is my security found in the person of Christ? I believe the reason this quote continues to captivate my thoughts is due to the upcoming trip to Bangladesh.

If it wasn’t for the Fellowship House, I don’t think I would have ever considered leaving the United States. Travel, adventure, and seeing new things, are all desires of mine. However, the idea of leaving to go and experience that in another nation seemed 1) unnecessary and 2) out of the question. There was a fear of leaving the nice comfortable freedom of the States to head to a nation whose language was foreign, customs were unfamiliar and religious views seeming somewhat terrifying. I think I always had in the back of my mind, “God can teach me things here in the United States and He hasn’t ‘called’ me to overseas missions.” What I am learning though is that ALL of us are called to be a part of taking the Gospel to the nations. The Bible is flooded with this message to the church (See: Psalm 22:27-28, 67:3-4, 96:3,10, Matthew 28:18-20, Romans 15:20-21, Revelation 5:9-10)!Now, the method to taking that Good News is different. It can be that of GOING to the nations, PRAYING for the nations, financially SUPPORTING the work in the nations, or EXPOSING others to the plentiful harvest fields. I am learning that my denying that call is both ignorant and disobedient to what God has called me to do as a disciple of Jesus.

God is Sovereign. He is the Maker and Sustainer of all. It’s easy to say that. However, it takes a whole new mindset to believe, trust and surrender to this truth. To believe this means that I have peace in my mind and heart that God is in control. To trust this means that I am confident in my God, my Maker, and my Daddy to hold my life in His mighty hands. To surrender to this means to count the cost, pick up my cross daily and follow after Him because He is good! There is no one more worthy than our loving, sovereign, and merciful God to risk it all for. This is the God who breathed the stars into existence, who commands the world’s existence by the sound of His voice, and who willingly surrendered His Son, so that we might become children of the Most High God. For this God, RISK IS RIGHT.
