Remembering to Give Thanks
Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever.
Psalm 136:1
This Thanksgiving, I’ve been thinking a lot about Psalm 136 and its focus on remembering. Over and over, it says, “For His steadfast love endures forever,” as it lists all the amazing things God has done. From creating the heavens to rescuing His people, the psalm reminds us to reflect on God’s faithfulness and love.
To give thanks, we need to remember. But how often do we actually take the time to look back? Life can be so busy that we forget to pause and think about what God has done for us. Psalm 136 shows us how important it is to name and reflect on the ways God has worked in our lives.
This is why journaling matters so much. People have always told me I should journal, but I’m starting to understand why. Writing things down helps us remember. It allows us to see the big picture—how God has been at work, even in the small, everyday moments. When we look back, we can see His grace, love, and faithfulness more clearly.
This year, I don’t want Thanksgiving just to be a one-day thing. I want to carry this practice of remembering and giving thanks into the next year. Whether it’s writing in a journal, praying, or just pausing to reflect, I want to make gratitude a regular part of my life.
Psalm 136 reminds us that God’s love is everywhere— in creation, in history, and in our own stories. Whether it’s the sun that lights the day, the moon that shines at night, or the ways God has provided for us, there’s always something to be thankful for.
This Thanksgiving, let’s make gratitude a habit, not just a holiday. Let’s take time to remember, to reflect, and to say, “Give thanks to the God of heaven, for His steadfast love endures forever.”
How will you remember to give thanks this season? Maybe it’s by writing, praying, or sharing your story with someone. However you do it, let’s make thankfulness a part of our everyday lives as we reflect on God’s unfailing love.
Blessings,
